We’re excited to announce that Dezeen has launched an exclusive new watch with Glasgow brand Instrmnt. We spoke with Instrmnt co-founder Ross Baynham about the collaboration.

The new watch is an individual take on Instrmnt’s popular 01 series, which currently features four Minimalist models influenced by mid-20th century industrial design.

Dezeen Watch Store first discovered Instrmnt when it launched a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Founders Ross Baynham and Pete Sunderland beat their initial £20,000 goal by more than £73,000.

Since first launching at Dezeen Watch Store in 2014, the brand has remained a popular bestseller and firm favourite with our customers.

“I think the quality and standing of Dezeen, both as a watch curator and as a hugely influential design and architecture magazine, speaks for itself,” said Baynham. “However the fact that they were our first ever retail partner means that we have a very strong relationship. They were an obvious choice for a collaborative project like this.”

Dezeen’s iteration of the timepiece features a navy blue leather strap and a gold case. The back of the case is engraved with the Dezeen logo.

“Working with the team at Dezeen, we wanted to create something that was firmly unisex, incorporated a little more colour that we would usually, and appealed to the design-led, independent customer base that Dezeen serves,” Baynham said.

The watch also features a three o’clock date window, sapphire crystal lens and stainless steel case. The watch comes “exploded” – pins, casing, strap parts and a tool are laid out in a box for the customer to construct themselves.

The strap is sourced from a team of craftsmen, who make the calf-leather accessories at a tannery located in Germany’s Bavarian forest.

“As a design studio we treat material with the utmost importance and have a fairly strict set of guidelines for each product we create,” said Baynham. “We continued working with our tannery in the Bavarian forest, Germany, to create a bespoke navy strap for this special edition, using hand-dyed box-calf leather.”

“The watch to us feels equally like an Instrmnt product and a Dezeen product,” he added. “It’s a limited run and we think they are going to be hard to get hold of.”
