Top 10 Men’s Dress Watches Review

As the watch world prepares for the release of the new products introduced at Baselworld 2015, we revisit my year-end “Top 10” lists for 2014, all originally posted on my blog, Watch-Insider.com. We have already looked at my favorite chronograph watches. This time, the focus is on last year’s top dress watches for men. To reiterate before we start, let me clarify that this is an alphabetical listing and not a ranking of dress watches and dress watch brands. As always, the dress watches listed here are my own personal favorites from the year. No jury has voted, no one has whispered anything into my ear, and — most importantly — no watch brand has paid me to be listed here.

Dress Watches
If you would like more information about one of the watches on the list, please use the search function on my blog. I have reported on all of them during the past months, and you are likely to find many more pictures and additional technical information on them. Many of these dress watches have also been covered separately here on WatchTime.com.

Finally, I am interested in your own feedback. Which men’s dress watches presented are your favorites? Please use the comments section to let us all know what you think.

A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Moonphase

A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Moonphase

The Lange 1 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and this new 41-mm Grand Lange 1 Moonphase blew my mind. For this gorgeous and elegant timepiece, one picture says more than 1,000 words. But at A. Lange & Söhne, the fascination continues when you turn a watch around. Its movement, Caliber L095.3, is deserves a mention for its beauty as well. This is a must-have-timepiece if you can afford it, no matter the case material.

Blancpain Villeret 8 Jours

Blancpain Villeret 8 Jours

A modern caliber with an eight-day power reserve, a wonderfully executed white enamel dial, and three hands: that’s all you need to create an elegant wristwatch. Blancpain knows how to seduce, and not only with its sports watches. The 42-mm Villeret 8 Jours is available only in a rose-gold case; it is powered by the in-house Blancpain Caliber 13.

Habring2 Felix

Habring2 Felix

This watch was made by Maria and Richard Habring in Carinthia in the south of my native Austria. I now offer these friends the respect they deserve for manufacturing their very first in-house caliber. To celebrate the first 10 years of the Habring2 brand, Maria and Richard presented their 38.5-mm Felix watch, equipped with the new Caliber A11.

Hublot Classic Fusion Power Reserve 8 Days King Gold

Hublot Classic Fusion Power Reserve 8 Days King Gold

This 45-mm Classic Fusion shows us that Hublot can design classical wristwatches. Personally, I would like to see more such watches from Hublot. I like the brand’s chronographs, no question, but more elegant Hublots on the market would be very welcome. The movement, Caliber HUB 1601, is manufactured in-house, as is the absolutely scratch-resistant 18k King Gold case.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Ultra Thin Grand Feu

Jaeger-LeCoultre Ultra Thin Grand Feu

When it comes to ultra-thin, in-house-developed-and-manufactured movements, the world of watches gets pretty small. Only a select few manufacturers can do what Jaeger-LeCoultre does. Its Caliber 849/1 is one of the thinnest movements on the market, measuring only 1.85 mm thick! The entire watch measures 5.04 mm thick, and has a diameter of 39 mm. That’s pure elegance.

Meistersinger Circularis

Meistersinger Circularis

I’ve always liked these watches, which use only one hand to indicate the time, but I was never a fan of the movements used by Meistersinger. Now the brand has developed its first in-house caliber and integrated it into this year’s Circularis. The hand-wound Caliber MSH01 has finally added some cachet to this German brand’s distinctive design. The blue-dialed version of this 43-mm watch is my favorite.

Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Moonphase

Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Moonphase

Since Jérôme Lambert took over as CEO of Montblanc, the brand has produced some incredible watches, many of which are surprisingly affordable. The watch shown here only costs 3,490 euros – not bad at all. The 39-mm Meisterstück Heritage Moonphase is powered by an ETA or Sellita automatic caliber to which a moon-phase indication is added.

Omega De Ville Trésor White Gold

Omega De Ville Trésor White Gold

This ticking beauty from Omega earned its spot on the wrist of George Clooney when he got married in Venice. Fortunately, the 40-mm watch is not reserved only for Hollywood royalty; it is a masterpiece that should make its way to many, many wrists. The Master Co-Axial Caliber 8511 is the most modern hand-wound caliber that Omega produces these days; it’s not only a top performer but totally anti-magnetic to more than 15,000 Gauss.

Piaget Altiplano 38 mm 900P

Piaget Altiplano 38 mm 900P

The thinnest mechanical wristwatch in the world, this Piaget is a watchmaking masterpiece and a true beauty. With the watch’s case serving as part of its movement, it measures a mere 3.65 mm (!) thick. Its diameter is a perfect 38 mm. I especially appreciate how Piaget makes its Caliber 900P, which is manufactured to fulfill the severe requirements of the Geneva Hallmark, visible as part of the dial.

Rolex Cellini Date

Rolex Cellini Date

Finally, a proper men’s dress watch from Rolex! I prefer this version, with the date displayed by a hand on a subdial. The 39-mm-diameter white-gold case contains Rolex Caliber 3165. You may have your own favorite among the new Rolex Cellini models, but for me this white-gold model with a black dial is the most elegant.

So what is your own take? Which top dress watches do you feel are missing from my list?
