In this short film, Glasgow design duo Instrmnt reveals the craftsmanship behind the new range of leather straps made for the updated 01 series (+ movie).

The Instrmnt 01 collection references the industrial design of the mid-20th century, and was born from a desire for watches that combine high-quality Swiss components with simple, utilitarian design.

Instrmnt‘s updated 01 range, which was unveiled in May 2015, consists of four watches that feature minimal monochrome faces and numbered markers.

The new leather straps are manufactured by a family-run business – one of the last left in Europe – based in Germany’s Bavarian forest. Many of the craftsmen have been working there for 30 years or more.

In the movie produced by Instrmnt, the straps are shaped, punctured and branded, before being tested and added to the watches.

The team of craftsmen makes the straps using south-German calf leather, sourced from a local tannery.

Each strap is constructed in 15 stages, all undertaken by hand or using traditional machinery. The straps are then individually tested and hand-packed by the Instrmnt team.
