Founded in 2014 and based in Australia, AÃRK produces watches with a modern design aesthetic and aims to create “simple and geometric timepieces that are inline with the underlying aesthetic of the brand”.

Daniel Emma is a studio with a background in industrial design, which aims to make things that are “just nice”. To date, they’ve designed a variety of objects ranging from desk accessories to furniture pieces. The Adelaide-based studio’s first watch design is a move away from its past projects in larger scale furniture and lighting, which were exhibited at last year’s London Design Festival.

AÃRK decided to collaborate with Daniel Emma because of a mutual respect and admiration for one another’s work.

“Working with likeminded people has always been a driving motivation for AÃRK as a brand, so with this collaboration we really wanted to open ourselves up to new ideas,” said the collective. “Daniel Emma welcomingly led the design process and we shaped the development with our knowledge and understanding of manufacturing capabilities surrounding timepiece construction.”

“The end result is a display of Daniel Emma’s honest aesthetic backed by their industrial design background, combined with our obsession for detail,” the team added.

Both the Carrara and Nero timepieces feature dials made from a thin layer of genuine marble. The use of raw materials means that no two watches are the same, a point that the brand are particularly fond of.

“Quite simply, the concept was born from Daniel Emma’s love of material as a base element to a design,” said AÃRK. “Pivoting on marble as a base element, the design of this watch consciously allows the natural beauty of the material speak for itself.”

The Carrara watch is named after a city and commune in Tuscany, Italy.  “Carrara is famous for the white and blue-grey marble quarried there,” explained the brand. “Subsequently, the name comes after the Italian town from which this kind of marble has traditionally been taken.”

The case of each watch is made from durable stainless steel – Carrara’s has a brushed-steel finish while Nero’s features a coating of metal compounds added using physical vapour deposition (PVD). Each watch is completed with an Italian calfskin leather band in a smooth grain.
